Root Cellar Collective: What is it?!

Hello and WELCOME to Root Cellar Collective, Portland Maine!

What is Root Cellar Collective you may ask?

It's a collective press essentially-- it started with Drafty Attic Press a publishing group ("bare bones", if you will) out of Massachusetts. By my good friend Michael Miller. The idea of a collective group, stemmed out of some great discussions with Michael. Root Cellar Collective is derived and a part of Drafty Attic Press.

Who is Drafty Attic Press/Root Cellar Collective comprised of?

Right now; Michael Miller (MA), Caitlin Martin (OH), and Kaiulani Anderson-Andrei(ME)

Where is Root Cellar spread out to?

Currently,Stockbridge, Massachusetts (soon to be changing), Portland, Maine, Terre Haute, Indiana, and Oxford, Ohio
What is the meaning of the journal "Root Collective"?

It is the essential idea of this organization the roots, and starters that make up the entirety.

How can Root Cellar Collective help me?

Root Cellar can help you by:
  • Basic publishing/and marketing your work.
  • You will be published in Root Collective a local journal (online, and in print).
  • Editing
  • Hopefully working with local artists and print companies (if the writer wants graphics and to physically print their work) I also work as an amateur photographer.
  • Being a free agent for YOU!
  • Spreading the good news of your work around Portland, Maine and elsewhere!
  • Working with local groups/businesses/and organizations to get your work out. (This includes -hopefully- readings at local businesses and groups, etc.)
  • This will be a local endeavor to Portland specifically. Buy local, support local writers!
  • In the future-- workshops?
  • Plus the best part? It's free for you!

 Now how does it work?

  1. Submit online to kaiulani.anderson.liggett@gmail.com (this will be temporary, until I can set up a Root Cellar Collective email to take the place of my personal one.)
  2. I will make editing suggestions; this is obviously a collaborative piece between the author and editor; with the integrity of the author in highest regard. (No wishy-wash, this is the writer's piece).
  3.  After edits, suggestions, and 'clean-ups' are made to formatting; it will then be sent to the printers (the idea of this is to use recycled paper/and or online journal submission. We want to be kind to mother nature).
  4. Root Cellar will then work with local businesses and groups to help you get the local coverage you deserve (from placing them in local coffee shops to bookstores-etc. to scheduling readings; and even possibly workshops in collaboration with Salt or USM)
  5.  As well as possibly working out information to sell your work for a profit each way. (This is a work in progress still). Your work will then be placed in our local journal "Root Collective"which will be distributed online and in local shops.
  6.  Sit back and watch your work be discovered.
Root Cellar Collective and Drafty Attic Press are here for you! We want to make this as streamlined and easy as possible to get your work out!

**Here comes the tricky part... Root Cellar isn't open submission  on just anything it has TWO topic guidelines.
  • It must be a Folk 'Piece' (something local and new: examples could be new-age folk stories, poems, etc.
  • Or it must be a piece pertaining to Social Activism. (This can be political or not, your choice!)
  • You're not limited on the type of piece you write! Examples include: poems, stories, post-modern works, etc. Just to name a few.
However the amount you submit is endless, it can be as little as one piece for the journal, up to a book that you want to collaborate on getting out!
